Basic Tips How to Prepare for the Unpredictible

Today's posting will be relatively short but still informative.

We grieve for all the losses of Oklahoma City due to the destructive tornadoes..  The human life lost, especially children (51 deaths officially as of this posting) and we grieve for those who lost their homes & worldly possessions.. the psychological trauma has to be immense.

And while its difficult to write on preventive steps in case of an emergency as sudden and immediate as a tornado, there are still practical things one can do to prepare so that something like this or other act of God befalls you, that you can take some control of things in your life.

1)  Keep your most valuable papers in zip-lock bags or other water-proof holders, and in one or two easy to carry folders.   This will make it easier when talking to insurance adjusters concerning your home or automobile.

Whatever is most important to you- birth certificates, wedding records, etc..., make copies of or keep originals in this special folder that will stay in your possession if/when you have to flee.
2)  Every person should have at least $1,000 in emergency cash funds in their home which is kept in a zip-lock bag or other water-proof container.  Preferably in $20's..  This should also be easily accessible in an impending event and kept close to you.

Same goes with extra credit cards you may possess..  As stated before, keep everything in waterproof bags to minimize chance of water-related damages.

3)  It is useful to not only have your address book where you can quickly get access but also a mini telephone directory which is usually 1/3 the size of a normal phone book directory and has pretty much all the same yellow-pages listings.

You never know who you will need to contact on your cell phone in an emergency.
4) As practicable, keep some food and water near you-- something easily transportable in a duffel bag along with everything else mentioned so far..  a couple bottled waters, some sealed food packages, etc..

Obviously, if you have an infant, have a prepared emergency bag set up with some food, diapers, clothing and other essentials.

Under this heading, we would also include essential medications you can not do without.  For diabetics, make sure you have necessary insulin.

5) Don't forget a small flashlight and extra batteries -- you never know if a situation will arise at night time which requires you to flee your home or surroundings for safety.

So now even though nothing can prevent the tornado, earthquake, hurricane or other act of God from occurring, you will be in a far better position to make necessary decisions by following these simple steps, than someone who only has the clothes on their back and is 100% dependent on charity to survive.

Our Prayers are with Oklahoma City..
